Bioscience
With the Cambridge area home to the largest cluster of bioscience activity outside North America, we’ve developed a highly regarded specialist team to advise clients both locally and further afield.
We advise everyone from individuals and start-ups to multinationals, research institutes and NHS Trusts. Bioscience sectors include clinical trials, drug discovery, medical devices, small molecules and biotechnology.
We are also a member of the Intellectual Property Advisory Committee of the BioIndustry Association – active in lobbying on intellectual property matters nationally and globally.
The lawyers in our bioscience team pride themselves on grasping the scientific principles of a technology and providing practical insight into commercialising it effectively. They strive to provide cost-effectiveness, particularly when young companies are seeking funding.
Bioscience advice covers:
- Funding, mergers, acquisitions and flotations
- Contracts ranging from confidentiality and materials transfer agreements to major licensing and collaboration deals
- Process scale-up and product manufacture
- Employee share option schemes
- Tackling intellectual property infringement or allegations that the client’s intellectual property infringes a third party
- Regulatory issues such as compliance with clinical trials regulations and novel food
- Data protection and patient confidentiality requirements
- Patient consent and Freedom of Information Act issues
- Competition law and anti-trust issues
- Contracts for employees, consultants and scientific advisory board members
- Immigration issues in connection with the recruitment of overseas staff
- Leases for laboratory premises
Bioscience is a global sector, so consequently we have developed a wide experience of negotiating contracts with an international element. As a founder member of Law Exchange – the international network of technology orientated law firms – we can obtain swift overseas advice when necessary.
