Introduction of Site Waste Management Plans from April
12 March 2008
With effect from 6 April 2008, the Site Waste Management Plans Regulations 2008 require site waste management plans for all construction and engineering projects exceeding £300,000 in England.
These requirements will apply to all contracts for construction, demolition, maintenance and alterations, and include the installation and removal of services, with stringent penalties for non-compliance.
The plans are required to detail the amount and type of waste produced on a construction site, and details of how it will be disposed of. Plans will need to be written at the design stage and constantly updated throughout the life of a project.
Projects costing over £500,000 have different requirements applied to them, with site owners needing to ensure that contracts with their principal contractors include provisions to deal with the new regulations
The regulations will not apply to projects planned before 6 April 2008 if construction work starts before 1 July 2008.
