Niel is a partner in the intellectual property team.
Experience:
Niel practises in the area of intellectual property and technology litigation, computer contracts, confidentiality, copyright, licensing, media and entertainment, passing off, trade mark and domain name disputes. Over the past 25 years he has handled a wide variety of cases at first instance and appellate level in various areas of commerce such as sports clothing, automotive products, software, mechanical and electrical devices, pharmaceutical and medical products. He has been involved in several substantial and reported cases. He also advises on IP aspects of commercial transactions. Niel has consistently received good reviews as a leader in the IP field in legal directories: "Niel Ackermann is praised by clients as having 'consistently been able to advise on the most appropriate strategy'" (Legal 500) and "He sees an issue so differently from any one else. Background:
Niel has BA LLB degrees from the University of Cape Town and a BSc degree from the Open University. He was admitted as an Advocate of Supreme Court of South Africa and worked as a journalist in Cape Town and London before becoming a solicitor. He has been partner specialising in Intellectual Property law in London and American law firms as well as at Hewitsons.
