Chariots of Fire Charity Relay Race 2008

13 May 2008

As Chariots of Fire 2008 is officially launched, we are calling all budding competitors to join in the fun of this celebrated race. This year, the event has been refreshed and some surprises await you!

Following in the footsteps of the famous film, the Chariots of Fire charity relay race is plotting its own heroic course across the history of time. The event is in its 17th year and has raised nearly six hundred thousand pounds for different charities.

"For the 2008 event, we have chosen to support two fantastic local charities; Romsey Mill and Red Balloon - Cambridge," said Race Director Charles Hewitson of co-sponsors Hewitsons.. "If you want to help make a difference to the lives of so many children, young people and families around Cambridge, enter a team in the race and join in the fun!"

Carrie Herbert, Director of Red Balloon - Cambridge said, "The charity provides a safe learning environment for children who have been so badly bullied they are unable to attend their mainstream school. The learner centre is crucial to re-building their self-confidence and regaining control of their learning."

Romsey Mill works with some of the most disadvantaged children, young people and families in Cambridgeshire, creating the opportunities they need to flourish. "We help overcome deprivation and exclusion by developing confidence, skills and aspirations," commented Neil Perry, the charity's Director.

The event is sponsored by Hewitsons and Grant Thornton UK LLP, along with co-sponsors The Cambridge News.

Laragh Jeanroy, Partner at co-sponsors Grant Thornton UK LLP added, "We are pleased to announce the launch of an exciting new Chariots of Fire website, where you can read all about the event, its history, see television coverage of last year's race and even add your own event photos!"

The race will start on Sunday 21 September at 9.30 from Queens' Green, Cambridge. Teams of six will run the 1.7 mile scenic route in relay format through the streets and colleges of Cambridge.

Prizes will be awarded for the fastest teams in various categories with a special prize going to the team who raises the most sponsorship. In the past this has totalled over £9,000, so you need to get as much sponsorship raised as possible to be in with a chance of winning!
