Hewitsons advises the MRC on a new state-of-the-art mouse facility at the Babraham Research Campus in Cambridge

16 July 2008

The new mouse facility is a replacement, upgrade and expansion of older facilities for breeding and housing mice for use in medical research. It will support internationally important MRC research into cancer, leukaemia, asthma, allergy and neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease, for which there is currently no generally effective treatment or cure.

The MRC in Cambridge, and the LMB in particular, has always been at the forefront of basic molecular biology and the use of animal models is an important part of the MRC translational strategy. This new facility will bring together the needs of different research groups and will provide a centre of excellence for the care and welfare of mice, as well as providing modern facilities in which to work for those caring for them.

Elizabeth Jones, head of the commercial property team, said: "This was an extremely interesting project involving not only the site acquisition and infrastructure arrangements, but also the Hewitsons' construction team in a highly engineered building."

The Hewitsons commercial property team is no stranger to working on stand-out projects. It represents English Partnerships and the landowners' consortium on the sale of the first major UK Zero Carbon Challenge site which is in Peterborough, and which will deliver an innovative, residential-led development of around 450 homes to the highest quality and design standards.
