Don't leave it to chance and make sure your loved ones are provided for by leaving a will
02 October 2008
Married couples are being urged to write a will despite increased legal protection in cases where one partner dies without making one.
The Ministry of Justice has announced that the statutory legacy to a spouse or civil partner in cases where no will has been written will increase to £250,000 where there are children and £450,000 where there are no children from 1 February 2009.
Hewitsons solicitor Jeremy Tucker said: "While this increase will give extra protection in cases where a spouse or civil partner dies without making a will, it also highlights how important it is for both men and women to make arrangements for their loved ones in the event of their death."
"Married couples and civil partners should not assume they will automatically be entitled to everything when their spouse or civil partner dies. Don't leave it to chance and make sure your loved ones are properly provided for by leaving a will."
