EU's 'wonky' veg ruling no help to East Anglian potato farmers
02 December 2008
The EU's decision to allow the sale of wonky fruit and vegetables will not directly benefit East Anglian potato farmers with large quantities of produce still not making it to supermarket shelves.
Marketing standards requiring 26 fruit and vegetables to be sold without any odd curves have now been scrapped on the advice of the European Commission but potatoes are not included on the list.
Jeanette Dennis, one of our partners, said: "While the headlines have focussed on the repeal of the marketing standards we should not forget that potatoes were never covered under this particular directive anyway, so in theory no size or shape restrictions apply.
"However, what is happening in practice is that the supermarkets dictate the size and shape, so large quantities of potatoes will still not make it to the retail shelves and we will continue to see waste in the potato industry."
