Susan's interest in local history sparked involvement in Ashwell Village Museum
An interest in local history and a desire to support the largest annual fundraising event in her village led solicitor Susan Greenbank to become trustee of Ashwell Village Museum.
Set-up to run the village museum, the charity organises an annual open day in May, in conjunction with the village church and school. Residents open their gardens and local businesses put on special events. Other attractions include Morris dancing, the Veteran Car Club parade, carriage driving, vintage tractors, old cycles and plant sales.
Susan said: “This year I opened my garden to the public, as did a number of other houses in the village. The event also saw an accordion display, trips up the historic church tower, bee keeping and honey tasting, as well as visits to a nuclear bunker. The day was a great success, with the proceeds going towards the upkeep of the museum.”
The museum, which houses a collection of artefacts going back as far as the local Roman treasure trove and the Goddess Senuna, is currently seeking funding to set up an online resource centre for photographic archives and other memorabilia.
