Overview:

Mark Elmslie is a partner in the firm's Technology Group. He represents clients in both contentious and non-contentious Intellectual Property matters and heads up the IP litigation team.

Experience:

Mark has extensive experience in intellectual property law and has conducted major litigation in both the UK and Australia for locally based and international clients across the whole spectrum of IP work, with particular emphasis on trade marks. Whilst most of his work is on the contentious side, he also has extensive experience in licensing, brand portfolio management, collaborative research agreements and other agreements concerning the vesting and exploitation of intellectual property rights.

He acts for household names in retailing, cosmetics and fashion, as well as a range of clients in other areas of commerce, ranging from novelty toys marketed worldwide, to household goods, to medical instruments. He has acted in a number of cases before the European Court of First Instance, and regularly represents US clients in cases in the UK as well as cross border litigation in Europe and the US, including obtaining evidence for use in US proceedings. The majority of Mark's work is in the field of branding and trade marks. He represented the defendants in the appeal proceedings in the UK One in a Million litigation.

A regular speaker and author on intellectual property issues, Mark conducts seminars for clients and industry bodies as well as giving regular lectures to Trade Mark Attorney students. He has been recognised as a leader in his field in legal directories, and is described as 'highly rated' in Legal 500 2008.

Background:

Mark has an LLB from the University of Adelaide and an LLM from the University of London. He has worked in the field of intellectual property for some 12 years, in London and Melbourne Australia and has been a partner at Hewitsons since 2002. He lives in Cambridge with his family, and his spare time is taken up by children, travel and (occasionally) golf.
