As the Under Sheriff of Northamptonshire, partner Dominic Hopkins was behind a historic event which recognises the role of the Courts and those administering justice in the County that took place in Northampton.
The service held at the fine county church in Northampton, was at the invitation of the High Sheriff of Northamptonshire, Mr James Shepherd-Cross, and brought together Judges and magistrates and representatives of many of the agencies that work in the Justice system.
In years past, the service marked the opening of the Assizes at the Sessions House. On this occasion, it was arranged to coincide with the arrival of the Honourable Mr Justice Flaux, the Presiding High Court Judge in the Midlands, who is sitting at Northampton this month in a case of murder that has caught the national media’s attention. He was joined at the church by Crown and County Court Judges, Magistrates, the Coroner, members of the Bar and the Chief Constable, among many others.
To honour the occasion, the Lord Lieutenant, Mayor and Councillors of the Borough were present and contributors included Bishops and other faith representatives from the county.
Dominic said: “I was extremely honoured to put this historic local event together with the High Sheriff. This is not just historic for the county, but for Hewitsons too, because a partner in the firm has held office as the county’s Under Sheriff for a century now.”
The service was preceded by robed processions to the packed church, a tradition that goes back centuries. Dominic commented: “The processions this year were particularly colourful, as we had an unprecedented number of High Sheriffs from other counties in attendance, dressed in their traditional costumes of velvet and lace. Behind the pageantry however is meaning. It is very important that we recognise the vital role that is carried out by our Judges and all those involved in administering law and order in the county and this occasion was a way of doing that. We have a world respected Justice system and should be proud of it.”
