A new High Sheriff of Northamptonshire has been installed at the Northampton Combined Courts Centre, with Hewitsons partner Dominic Hopkins declared as the Under Sheriff. On 5th April, Mr James Shepherd-Cross and Dominic made their declarations of office before the Lord Lieutenant, Lady Juliet Townsend, at a short ceremony in Open Court in the presence of the judiciary and other guests. After the monarchy, the High Sheriff is the oldest office in the land and this ceremony goes back centuries. It is a legal requirement that following his appointment by the Queen the incoming High Sheriff makes a Declaration – a promise to the Crown - and appoints the Under Sheriff within a month of his appointment being gazetted. Dominic has now been the Under Sheriff of Northamptonshire for 6 years and it is an office with which a Hewitsons partner has been involved since the early part of last century. At the ceremony, the outgoing High Sheriff, Mr John Townsend, handed over his Shield of Office to mark the end of his year. This will be affixed to the wall of the Courts. Mr Shephard-Cross will now assume the responsibilities vested in the High Sheriff which include providing support to the Judges and others involved in the administration of Justice. His themes for the year include the promotion of the county’s charities and encouraging the involvement of young people in sporting and outdoor activities.
